Hey guys! So I get asked quite often about what I do regularly to keep my hair looking healthy and since it is still summertime, I figured it would be a good idea to write a post giving some helpful tips about maintaining the healthiest hair possible over the next couple months.
I love summertime and being out in the sun and enjoying it to the fullest. However, although most of us consider the importance of protecting our skin from being exposed to too much sun, we don’t always consider the sun’s effect on our hair as well.
There are a bunch of products on the market that can help you protect your hair and boost its’ health during the summer months; however, there are also some things you can do on your own that can make a big difference.
Here are a few tips that I abide by for keeping my hair looking its’ best during the summer (many of these are good tips and things that I do throughout the entire year, not just summer). I hope that you find these helpful :D
· One of the most obvious things is to make sure that you stay hydrated. I can’t stress how important it is to drink a lot of water. This is something that will not only benefit your hair, but also your overall health as well.
· Try and avoid being out in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time. If you can’t avoid this, there are shampoos that have SPF that you can use or you can always wear a cute, stylish hat.
· Although I love hot showers, I really try to avoid using really hot water when washing my hair. This will only end up drying my hair out.
· Aside from drinking water, it is really important to eat a balanced nutritious diet. Foods rich in protein and vitamin B6, B12, C, Calcium, Folic Acid, Magnesium, etc…(the list goes on). All of these are extremely important for maintaining healthy hair, skin, & nails.
· Try to avoid hair products with alcohol, since this will really dry your hair out even more.
· I try to use moisturizing shampoos and conditioners (these work very well for me, but might not for everyone)
· I use a deep conditioner as needed. I do this maybe 1-2 times per month, it really depends on how my hair is holding up.
· Sometimes before getting out the shower, I rinse my hair with cool water. I haven’t researched this in-depth, but I’ve heard that it can help seal in moisture.
· I allow my hair to air dry as often as possible. I realize that this isn’t something that works for everyone, but I find that it makes a big difference for me. When getting ready, I always do my hair last, this way it has had time to dry somewhat and I won’t have to use as much heat on it.
· Especially in the summer months, I try to avoid heat as often as I can. I also don’t use my blow dryer on the highest setting. I tend to fluctuate between the medium and cool settings. When it comes to curling my hair or using flat irons, I’ve been cutting back on doing these things on a regular basis. I think this is even more important in the summer months. But any time that I use heat, I always use a heat protectant spray first.
· My family and I like to go to the lake a few times throughout the summer and we are always in and out of the water. One thing that I always bring is some detangler and some leave-in conditioner. These really come in handy. Also, I never brush my hair when it is wet, as hair is much more likely to break. I try my best to detangle it with my fingers and I only brush it once it is mostly dry.
Those are a few of the tips that I follow regularly, but they are really important during the summer to keep my hair from drying out. Hopefully you guys found that helpful! Please be sure to comment below and share your best summer hair care tip.
